We live in an era where access to information is incredibly easy. However, if the information is all we needed then we would all be jacked, millionaires. The same happens when we want to hire a professional trainer and don’t want to lose money.
For example, as a ‘high end’ personal training facility we charge some of the highest rates in Boston, but we aren’t going to teach you anything you could not find on your own* if you spent the time and effort to conduct the research.
*there’s a distinct difference between finding information, understanding information and utilizing information.
So why would you pay?
As I previously mentioned, people generally need more than just information. It’s the systems, structures, and support that people pay for so they can implement the information in an efficient way and have confidence that what they are doing will work.
However, if you feel like you have enough knowledge and drive to DIY with only minimal help from a professional then here are some great things to think about:
- Do you know what you want and How this matches with what you need?
- Do you know where/ who can provide you with what you want and what you need?
- Do they have a record of success and a reputation that highlights results?
- Do you trust the professional and are you willing to do what they say?
- And most importantly: Will you actually do the work.
If you answer yes for all of these then you can simply purchase a workout plan from known professionals.
I recently paid $70 for a program from Christian Thibedeau, he has a great reputation. I trust in his ability to produce great programs; I know what I wanted and needed and I knew how to implement the program correctly.
However, if I wanted him to personally assess, track, train me in person then I imagine that would cost a significant amount more money and although the outcome could be relatively the same from me following the program independently as it would be if I trained with him personally. The experience and value would be drastically different.
Spending time with someone who knows more than you and can impart that knowledge is worth more than the cost of an individual session as I can utilize that knowledge for life. Hence why I have paid $5000+ for coaching programs.
What’s important is knowing what you want, what you value, and what you are willing to pay for.
There are many options out there, but you should find a solution that suits your needs.
The key difference is how much time you get to spend with a trained professional.
On a final note, remember that our health is the most valuable thing we have; don’t short-change it or pay cheap as you will inevitably end up paying twice.
