This is a tough time of year to stay on track with the holidays approaching, but let’s be honest, there are many times where there are challenges keeping us from achieving our health & fitness goals… here are 5 Tips to get out of a Workout Rut:
1. Grab a friend!
It’s always more fun to work out with someone else. The things that someone else does, will definitely be different than the things you are doing. Or maybe you have a friend who loves a certain spin studio or instructor, invite yourself to join! Having someone else who shares a love of fitness- no matter what this is- is always motivating.
I joined a new gym a few years ago and found myself struggling with getting used to new equipment and really lacking the desire to be there. One day, I happened to notice some fierce, boss babe that was crushing her workout… I ended up introducing myself and asked if she’d ever been up for training together. We’ve been training 1-2x a week together for over a year.
2. Do something out of your element!
We’ve talked about choosing a workout that you enjoy doing, but what happens if you get bored or reach a plateau doing the same type of workout over and over?? While it’s easy to walk into the gym and do the workouts you are comfortable with, enjoy doing, or are great at… it’s sometimes more empowering to do something out of your comfort zone.
A few years ago, I was coming out of a competition and was in need of a break from the gym and a friend randomly invited me on a hiking trip in Sedona. I had never been hiking before… ever. I asked what I would need, ordered it online and booked my flight. It remains to be one of my all-time favorite adventures. I was so outside of my comfort zone and that was exactly what I needed!
3. Remember why you started, or how you feel after working out.
The best way to do this is to journal when you start, how you feel after each workout or week, and to write down your goals. When you get down on yourself or are having a hard time getting back into your routine, look at how far you’ve come and how it has positively affected your life.
4. Reward yourself!
Try setting a goal… with a big, fat, amazing reward at the finish line! Whether it’s a meal you enjoy, a new workout outfit, a spa trip, or anything you really feel is a splurge, set an achievement prize!
5. Enlist the help of a trainer.
Accountability is a great motivator. Having a weekly appointment, means you can’t put it off until tomorrow. Knowing you have a coach or a trainer who is going to check in with you and make sure you are achieving your goals is, in my opinion, imperative.
After I had my first son, I was really struggling to make it into the gym. I kept saying I would go and just wasn’t going. I had the time, I knew what to do once I got there, but because it wasn’t a scheduled time, I wasn’t going. Finally, I walked into the gym and announced I needed a trainer. LOL. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. For the longest time as a new Mom, I only worked out that one day a week that we had a scheduled training appointment and it was one of the most relaxing, rewarding and beneficial hours of my week!
The past few weeks, I’ve been trying to tag along for one of Coach Justin’s workouts… it’s always innovative, fun, and something I would NEVER do on my own and I’m LOVING it!!!! Check out one of our latest sessions here.
